They tested more than 20 amenities: gyms, ping pong tables, collaborative spaces, standing desks, free coffee, private meeting rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One feature consistently distinguished high-performing teams from average ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the gym. Not the caf\u00e9. Not the open collaborative space your last office fit-out led with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quiet place to do focused work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High-performing teams, what Friedman calls \u201csuperteams,\u201d were 52% more likely than average teams to have access to a place where they could concentrate without interruption. That&#8217;s a significant gap. And it tells you something that most office design conversations get backwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings at a glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Of 20+ amenities tested, quiet space for focused work was the strongest differentiator of high-performing teams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-performing teams were 52% more likely to have access to a place to concentrate without interruption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average worker loses 29 hours per week to meetings, email, and messages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High performers work uninterrupted for 106 minutes on average, versus 77 minutes for average teams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-person, remote, and hybrid teams were equally likely to be high performers. Location isn&#8217;t the variable; focus conditions are<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The collaboration paradox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the counterintuitive part. The research isn&#8217;t arguing against collaboration. It&#8217;s arguing that better collaboration depends on something that happens before people come together: individual thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friedman points to research on brainstorming that illustrates this clearly. Groups that brainstorm together often generate fewer and less original ideas than groups where people develop ideas independently before bringing them to the group. The practice, called brainwriting, produces better collective output precisely because it protects time for independent thought first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The implication for workspace design is direct. The open floor plans and collaborative hubs that defined a decade of office reinvention were built on the assumption that more togetherness produces better work. The data says otherwise. Effective collaboration requires both: space to think, and space to come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most offices have plenty of the second. Far fewer have enough of the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where does the focus go?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friedman&#8217;s research puts a number on the cost of interruption. The average worker loses 29 hours every week to meetings, email, Slack, and messages before completing a single meaningful task. A single interruption might seem trivial. But dozens throughout the day fragment attention in ways that make complex, meaningful work nearly impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On high-performing teams, people reported being able to work without interruption for an average of 106 minutes. On average teams, that number was 77 minutes, or 38% less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gap doesn&#8217;t happen by accident. High-performing teams deliberately protect focus time: dedicated focus blocks, meeting-free periods, systems that reduce the need to interrupt colleagues in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the physical environment is part of that system. When there&#8217;s no quiet space available, the only options are fighting for concentration in an open-plan floor, booking a meeting room for solo work, or giving up and going home. None of those are good answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does remote, hybrid, or in-person matter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most striking findings in Friedman&#8217;s research: it doesn&#8217;t matter whether a team works in-person, remote, or hybrid. High-performing teams are equally likely to appear across all three arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What that tells you is that location is not the variable. The conditions for focused work are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remote workers lose focus to video calls and messages. In-person workers lose it to background noise, drop-ins, and the expectation of constant availability. Hybrid workers often get both. The work arrangement changes the source of the problem. It doesn&#8217;t solve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teams that perform best build deliberate systems to protect focus, wherever their people happen to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bureau read<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the question we spend most of our time on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not \u201cwhere should people work?\u201d but \u201cwhen they are at work, can they actually do it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research Friedman has produced makes the case that a quiet workspace isn&#8217;t a perk or a nice-to-have. It&#8217;s the differentiator. The amenity that, out of more than 20 options, actually moves the needle on team performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most offices weren&#8217;t designed with that in mind. Or they were, on day one, before headcount changed and the one quiet room became the default all-hands space. The environment gets fixed. The team keeps moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bureau&#8217;s booths are built for exactly this gap. Not a renovation. Not a redesign. A quiet space that shows up when the work demands it, and gets out of the way when it doesn&#8217;t. Modular, reconfigurable, and available across a floor plan that was designed for something slightly different than the team you have today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your team is fighting the floor plan for focus time, that&#8217;s the problem worth solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/withbureau.com\/shop\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3488\">Give your team a quiet place to work<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three things worth doing this week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HBR piece closes with practical recommendations. They&#8217;re worth repeating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Treat focused work as part of collaboration, not the opposite of it.<\/strong> Individual thinking isn&#8217;t the enemy of teamwork. It&#8217;s the input. Build time for it deliberately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Experiment with focus blocks.<\/strong> Designate one 60-minute window each week where the team isn&#8217;t expected to respond to messages or attend meetings. See what happens. Iterate from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Give people control over where they do different kinds of work.<\/strong> Writing, analysis, and strategic thinking need different conditions than alignment meetings and brainstorms. If your office only has one setting, it&#8217;s optimized for neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research isn&#8217;t complicated. High-performing teams protect the conditions for their best thinking.
