Speech Reduction

Speech reduction refers to the decrease in sound level, measured in decibels, as speech travels from one space to another. It reflects real-world acoustic performance by accounting for factors like gaps, ventilation, and surrounding noise, making it a more practical metric than lab-based ratings for understanding how sound is experienced in open environments.

Why Speech Reduction Matters in Real-World Acoustic Design

Speech reduction is one of the most practical ways to understand how sound behaves in everyday environments. Unlike lab-based ratings that rely on sealed conditions, speech reduction reflects what actually happens when sound moves through real spaces. Offices, shared environments, and modular setups all introduce variables like airflow, material transitions, and background noise, which directly affect how far and how clearly speech travels. Measuring the drop in sound level provides a clearer picture of how much a conversation is softened as it leaves a space.

This matters because people are not just looking for quieter environments. They are looking for fewer distractions and greater control over what can be heard. A reduction in speech level helps limit how far conversations carry and how noticeable they are to others nearby. While it does not guarantee full speech privacy, it plays a critical role in reducing intelligibility and improving overall acoustic comfort. In practice, speech reduction is one of the key factors that supports speech privacy, helping ensure conversations are not easily understood outside a space. By focusing on real-world sound behaviour, it offers a more relevant and reliable way to evaluate acoustic performance in modern, open environments where traditional assumptions no longer apply.
