Speech Privacy

Speech privacy refers to the degree to which conversations are unintelligible to others outside a space. It focuses on reducing speech clarity rather than eliminating sound entirely. Because some sound is often still audible, speech privacy is achieved when conversations can no longer be easily understood, minimizing distraction and protecting sensitive information.

Why Speech Privacy Matters in Modern Workspaces

Speech privacy is less about eliminating sound and more about controlling what others can understand. In most real-world environments, especially open or shared spaces, achieving complete silence is unrealistic. Conversations will often still be faintly audible, but when speech is no longer intelligible, it stops being distracting and no longer carries sensitive meaning. This distinction is what makes speech privacy such an important concept in acoustic design.

Rather than relying on a single rating or measurement, speech privacy is the result of multiple factors working together. Elements like enclosure design, internal sound absorption, and how sound escapes into the surrounding environment all play a role in shaping how speech is perceived outside a space. Even small details, such as ventilation openings or door seals, can influence how clearly conversations travel. Because of this, real-world performance is far more meaningful than controlled lab metrics. Focusing on speech privacy helps create environments that support concentration, reduce distractions, and allow people to speak freely without concern that they are being clearly overheard.
