Seismic bracing refers to the brackets and hardware fitted to a freestanding structure, such as an office booth, that secure it to fixed anchor points in the building so it cannot tip or slide during an earthquake. The brackets attach to the booth’s base or frame and tie the structure to anchors installed in the floor.
Why Seismic Bracing Matters for Office Booths
In high seismic risk regions like British Columbia and California, building codes often require freestanding structures above a certain size, including office booths, to be restrained so they cannot move independently during an earthquake. Updated seismic risk assessments in these regions have raised the assessed probability of a major event, which means a growing number of projects are now deemed to require bracing. A braced booth moves with the building during a seismic event instead of shifting or toppling, which protects the people inside and around it and keeps exit routes clear. Bracing works together with seismic anchoring, the hardware fastened into the floor itself; the bracing on the booth’s side connects to those anchors to form a complete restraint system.
Whether bracing is required, and to what degree, depends largely on what the building is for. Codes group buildings into categories based on how critical they are after an earthquake. Facilities that must remain operational post-event, such as hospitals and healthcare buildings, government facilities, and airports, sit in the highest tier and face the strictest requirements. Public buildings such as academic institutions and libraries typically fall in the next tier, with standard commercial buildings below that. The age and construction of the building also factor in, since older structures were built to earlier seismic standards.
Bracing is a mechanical connection, not a visible modification. Brackets are fitted to the booth’s base or frame and bolted to the anchors installed in the floor slab, with the hardware typically concealed beneath or behind the booth. The booth looks and functions exactly as it would otherwise; it is simply attached to the building the same way shelving or storage racking would be in those environments. Whether your site requires bracing depends on your location, building type, and local code, so your building manager, general contractor, or project engineer can confirm what applies. If it is required, specifying it before installation ensures the right hardware is used and the floor conditions are suitable.
